Standard Sindhi Braille was ratified by the Sindhi Language Authority in 2016. It is taught in schools and read by touch across Sindh today, and until this project it existed only on paper: no software could produce a single line of it, and the world's open braille library had no table for the script Pakistan actually writes.
This is the first digital
implementation of that code. A translator that works in both directions, a
liblouis table so screen readers and embossers can use it, and
a written specification in English and Sindhi. Every rule is checked against
the committee's own printed book, and on 15 August 2026 a blind reader read
an embossed page of it, cold, without an error.

A code that existed on paper, and nowhere else

Braille for Sindhi was settled ten years ago by a committee of six under the Sindhi Language Authority. Textbooks are printed in it. Teachers teach it. Blind students read it.
But a braille code only becomes usable at scale when software knows it: when a screen reader can speak a page, when a teacher can type a worksheet and emboss it that afternoon, when a book can be converted instead of re-typed by hand. None of that existed for Sindhi. The world's open braille library, liblouis, ships tables for more than a hundred languages, and had nothing for Sindhi in the script Pakistan actually writes.
This project closes that gap, and does it without inventing anything: the code implemented here is the committee's, letter for letter.

معياري سنڌي بريل رھبر, page 39. Sindhi has more sounds and marks to write than braille has cells to write them with. The committee said so before anyone tried to put it in software.

This marks every line as a hemistich — right for a bait, wrong for a book — so it stays off while a document is open. For a poem, paste it in instead. شعر واري ڳالهه هر سٽ کي مصرع بڻائي ٿي — جيڪا هڪ بيت لاءِ صحيح ۽ ڪتاب لاءِ غلط آهي — انهيءَ ڪري دستاويز کُلي هجڻ وقت اها بند رهي ٿي. ڪنهن شعر لاءِ اُهو هتي لکو.
Reading braille back into Sindhi is the harder direction. Six cells carry more than one meaning, so the software has to work out which one is meant from where it sits. See why.
For someone who already reads braille
انهن لاءِ جيڪي اڳ ۾ ئي بريل پڙهن ٿا
A blind teacher does not want to type Sindhi letters. They want to type dots. This turns an ordinary keyboard into a braille writer, the same six keys as a Perkins brailler. No braille display, no special hardware. Press the keys for one cell together, as a chord, and release.

Some rules need the whole sentence

Most people assume a braille translator is a lookup table: one letter in, one cell out. For Sindhi that gets you most of the way and then fails on ordinary schoolbook text — fractions, dates, a repeated word.
بريل ترجمي جو سولو طريقو هڪ فهرست آهي: هڪ اکر اندر، هڪ خانو ٻاهر. سنڌيءَ لاءِ اهو غلط آهي، ۽ جتي غلط آهي اُتي ئي درسي ڪتاب ڀڄي پوندو.
Rules that need more than one word
اهي ضابطا جن لاءِ هڪ اکر ڪافي ناهي
Three rules cannot go in a table, because you cannot decide them from one letter.
هن ڪوڊ جا ٽي ضابطا ڪنهن به فهرست ۾ لکي نه ٿا سگهجن، ڇاڪاڻ ته اُنهن جو فيصلو ڪرڻ لاءِ رڳو سامهون واري اکر تي نظر ڪافي ناهي.
- A repeated word is written once, then two cells of dot 3. To know that, you have to compare two whole words.
- A fraction writes the top number in the ordinary digits and the bottom one in the same digits dropped a row. If the top number is 1 it is left out. You need both halves before you can write either.
- ع means عليه السلام after a prophet's name and عيسوي after a year. The cells are the same. Only the word before it tells you which.
- ورجايل لفظ ٻه ڀيرا نه لکبو آهي. هڪ ڀيرو لکي، پوءِ اهڙا ٻه خانا لڳندا آهن جن مان هر هڪ ۾ رڳو نقطو 3 هوندو آهي. اهو فيصلو ڪرڻ لاءِ ٻن پورن لفظن کي ڀيٽڻو پوندو آهي، هڪ اکر پڙهڻ سان نه ٿيندو.
- ڀڃ ۾ مٿيون عدد عام انگن ۾ لکبو آهي ۽ هيٺيون عدد اُنهن ئي انگن ۾ جيڪي هڪ قطار هيٺ لاٿل هوندا آهن؛ ۽ جڏهن مٿيون عدد 1 هجي ته اهو لکبو ئي ناهي. لڪير جي ٻنهي پاسن کي گڏ ڏسڻو پوندو آهي.
- ع پيغمبر جي نالي پٺيان عليه السلام آهي؛ سن پٺيان عيسوي. ساڳيا ٻه خانا، فيصلو اڳئين لفظ مان ٿيندو آهي.
A rule table cannot hold these three, which is why there is a translator as well as a table.

Built twice, on purpose

There are two: a translator
that needs nothing installed, and a liblouis table for NVDA,
BrailleBlaster and the other open braille tools. They were written
separately, then run against the same sentences and compared cell by
cell.

Every disagreement meant one of them was wrong. Chasing those down is how several rules got settled properly.
جتي ٻنهي ۾ اختلاف ٿيو، اُتي هڪ غلط هو؛ ۽ اهو ڳولڻ ته ڪهڙو غلط آهي، ائين ڪيترائي ضابطا اندازي بدران بلڪل درست طور مقرر ٿيا.
The last one was ۾. Contracted braille writes it as one letter, م; uncontracted spells it out. The table was contracting it in both grades. They have matched on every case since.

One rule, drawn: how a fraction is written
هڪ ضابطو، نقشي ۾: ڀڃ ڪيئن لکجي ٿي
The guide calls the ordinary digits the Upper Sign and a fraction's denominator the Lower Sign. The lower digits are the same ten cells with every dot moved down one row. There is no fraction bar, and when the numerator is 1, it is not written at all.

Where the difficulty is

Every cell below carries more than one meaning in this code. Where it sits settles almost all of them. One case never does.

This table is generated from the code tables themselves, not written by hand, so it cannot fall out of step with them. It counts only marks that stand as a single cell. The foreign-word marks and the arithmetic signs are two cells whose halves differ, and they reuse several of the cells above; those are settled by the pair, never by the cell alone.

This project is mine end to end: working through the standard, building the translator and the liblouis table, designing the verification that checks them, writing the specification in English and Sindhi, and building this site. It is done in partnership with Riaz Hussain Memon: blind teacher, President of the Pakistan Association of the Blind (Sindh), and a member of the committee that authored the code. He is the authority on what the code says; I am the one who built the software. Mansoor Ali Kori works alongside him on the composing and has been part of the meetings throughout.
If you have a language, a script or a standard that exists on paper and needs to exist in software, I am interested. That means accessibility tooling, low-resource language work, and writing systems that mainstream software ignores.
